Another anticipated local derby saw Poole Town comfortably win through to end Hamworthy's Dorset Senior Cup campaign for the second season running. On another bitterly cold night Poole fielded a strong line-up with Grant Porter returning in goal for the injured Harvell. The County Ground is never any easy place to visit but with inspirational Nathan Walker suspended and a couple of other defenders out (including ex Poole Town Steve Gilbert) hopes were high for a Poole win and a semi final place. As always Poole started brightly and looked pretty comfortable right from the off. They got the perfect start when the deadlock was broken as early as the eighth minute. Simon Browne crossed well from the left and Charlie Austin scored his 23rd goal in as many games with a clinical header at the near post. On eleven minutes it looked as though Poole would double their lead. Stuart Brown took advantage of an Ollie Cherrett mistake and sprinted down the left wing. His cross eluded the defenders and Kevin Gill running in hit a sweet first time shot which hit the outside of the post and went wide. Being such an intense derby the game did enter a niggly stage with some fouls and challenges going in a bit too hard. That said the referee was a little whistle happy and a few yellow cards ensued, Austin and Hubbard in the book for Poole. On 31 minutes the home keeper punched clear and Stu Brown missed a good chance when his volley went over the bar. Just before the break Taffy Richardson swept the ball out wide to Luke Whitley and his superb cross was met by Charlie Austin diving in at the far post, his header finding only the side netting. A very good first half performance from Poole and they were unlucky not to be more than a goal up at the break. Half time: 0-1. The second half followed a similar pattern and the early goal in the second half effectively killed the game off. On 50 minutes Taffy Richardson clipped a perfect ball into the path of Austin but his volley went over. A minute later and Bailey-Pearce twisted and turned his way brilliantly on the left and when his shot was parried by the keeper Kevin Gill was on hand to thump home the rebound. His claims to the Poole bench of a '25 yard volley' were slightly exaggerated........ by about 23 yards! Despite being in total charge Poole were still pushing hard for another goal. Most of the danger came down the right side as Whitley and Gill were both causing all sorts of problems to the Hamworthy side. On 68 minutes Steve Smith and Aaron Skelton replaced Austin and Hubbard and a few minutes later Dave Sturgess came on for Stuart Brown. The game tailed off a bit towards the end with the Poole defence looking a little sloppy and Hamworthy starting to look a little dangerous. But in all honesty the result never looked in doubt - Poole were simply too quick, strong and precise for their local rivals. In the dying minutes Hamworthy had a long range shot go just wide but at the other end Steve Smith had a shot turned away for a corner and from the resulting kick Simon Browne 'knee'd' one just over the bar. The semi final now awaits. |
