Having already won the reverse fixture 4-0 at Tatnam just a month ago, The Dolphins travelled to Wiltshire to extend their unbeaten league record. Strikers Charlie Austin and Stuart Brown were replaced by Leigh Phillips and Steve Smith and Michael White started with Carl Poore on the bench. Also back from holiday and back on his familiar left wing was James Bailey-Pearce. New signing ex-Cirencester Town, Sean Bailey started on the bench. A bumpy pitch with a slope greeted the players and from the first whistle it was apparent that good passing football would not be possible for much of this game. That aside the first half performance from Poole was one of the worst so far this season. The omens were not good when in the very first minute the defence was completely motionless as the ball dropped to a Laverstock player unmarked just four yards out. He hit the volley with some power and Harvell pulled off the save of the season so far - superb reactions turning the ball past the post. Despite the shaky start Poole took the lead after just four minutes. Steve Smith tackled back on the halfway line and a couple of passes later he was away on goal, tucking the ball past the keeper with his left foot. Simon Browne picked up a yellow on 14 minutes and a subsequent injury saw him replaced by Car Poore on 20 minutes. It was a Poore cross six minutes later that saw Leigh Phillips rise to head just wide of the right hand post. On 35 minutes Taffy Richardson set the ball up beautifully for Luke Whitley in the box but his header also flashed just wide of the post. Playing up the hill in the first half Poole's defence came under pressure time and time again as they attempted to play the ball out from the back. This was causing far more problems than it should and with less than subtle urgings from Killick and Cuss on the touchline the tactics were soon changed to just 'clear the lines' whenever they could. Not pretty but far more effective on this pitch. On 41 minutes following some good pressure from Laverstock the home side won a freekick. Again the defence didn't appear to be switched on and they took a quick freekick which caught Poole cold. A shot from an unmarked forward was again brilliantly saved by Harvell who dived low to his right to tip it round the post. On the stroke of half time Poole doubled their lead when a perfect Hubbard corner was met by the head of Taffy Richardson and the ball went through a crowd of players to end up in the net. As the players walked off at half time manager Killick made a point of going across to Harvell and clapping him on the back - thanks no doubt for being the main reason the Dolphins were leading. Half time: 0-2 Dave Sturgess replaced Carl Poore for the second half as Poore had picked up a knee injury in the first half and was unable to shake it off. This left Sturgess in midfield with Taffy Richardson dropping to right back. The second half was better from Poole as finally they managed to string some passes together and play some decent football. On 55 minutes a Hubbard corner from the left missed everyone and was deflected away for another corner. Bailey-Pearce's corner from the right saw Dibba's header deflected but Steve Smith headed over the line to claim his second of the game, drawing level with Charlie Austin on 7 league goals this season. On 62 minutes Bailey-Pearce got down the wing and crossed to the far post. Gill managed to get the ball under control before his snap shot volley missed the post and found the side netting. Jack Swann came on for Leigh Phillips shortly afterwards. Another Bailey-Pearce corner eventually found it's way out to Mickey Hubbard 25 yards out and his fine strike beat the keeper but was headed off the line. The match was getting a bit niggly as the half wore on - the Laverstock number 9 squealing and howling every time any player came anywhere near him. On 73 minutes Whitley challenged the number 9 with a great tackle but unfortunately the referee bought the crying again but ended up booking both players. The final goal came on 81 minutes and for the third time in the match came from a corner. Hubbard delivered to the far post and Sturgess ghosted in to fire a great volley into the net from a tight angle. |
