With a bye in the first round Poole Town made their entry into this season's Wessex League Cup with a second round tie at home to fellow Premier League side Lymington Town.
Some expected changes were made as manager Tom Killick handed debuts to Sean Bailey and the returning Michael Walker. Leigh Phillips and Steve Smith comprised the front two for this game again with Swann and Austin on the bench. Mickey Hubbard was also rested as Dave Sturgess started in midfield alongside Taffy Richardson.

The first quarter of the match was fairly poor with Poole not really getting going with their usual brand of passing football. The atmosphere on and off the field felt quite flat but there was no lack of effort from either side. Poole took the lead on 25 minutes. A pass was fizzed through the defence on the greasy surface and Taffy Richardson timed his run to perfection to beat the offside trap. As he closed on the goal he kept his cool well, waited for the keeper to commit and then placed his shot into the corner. The offside trap was the biggest weapon that Lymington possessed and they continually played high up the pitch all match, looking to spring it as often as possible. It is a dangerous tactic and although Poole players were caught out with alarming regularity they still managed to break through on several occasions.

On 33 minutes Lymington had a freekick on the edge of the Poole area and with Harvell at full stretch luckily the kick whistled just past the post. A minute later and Whitley provided a fine cross and Steve Smith stretched but could only just knock the ball over the bar. It was to be a frustrating night for the young striker who played very well nonetheless. On 40 minutes a cross from the right was met superbly by Smith on the volley but the keeper brilliantly turned his shot away. Sean Bailey picked the ball up on the left and his cross was met by Smith again with another great volley only to see the keeper already back on his feet turn the ball away again for a corner. The resulting corner saw the ball drop to Lamin Dibba just a few yards out but his fierce shot went wide of the post. The Lymington goal was leading a charmed life, aided brilliantly by their keeper who continued his great form throughout the match.

Half time: 1-0

The second half was much better from Poole as they laid siege to the Lymington goal, mounting attack after attack in relentless waves. On 48 minutes Sturgess met a cross from the left and the keeper again did well to save his volley. Shots rained in from everywhere - too many to note down during some periods! On 57 minutes Jack Swann replaced Leigh Phillips and Aaron Skelton made a rare appearance, replacing the impressive Sean Bailey.

Despite limited action this season Skelton produced a superb half an hour of football, proving once again that he is a class apart from most players at this level and also reaffirming just how important he could be if Poole are to chase honours this season. On 61 minutes he produced a great pass to Steve Smith and as Smith ran onto it he went for the chip over the keeper. The keeper managed to back-pedal quick enough to jump and tip the ball away for a corner. Four minutes again and a Mike Walker thunderbolt from the left side of the penalty area brought another fine save from the visiting keeper.

Despite total possession Poole were still only one goal ahead and on 72 minutes Charlie Austin came off the bench to replace Steve Smith. As if to underline how close the score was Lymington broke a minute later and Harvell was forced into a double save, eventually punching the ball into the air before seeing it bounce down onto the top of the crossbar and going for a corner.

On 76 minutes Skelton delivered a great corner into the box and a header (Walker?) saw the ball fly just over the bar. With 10 minutes left the referee awarded Poole a penalty after the keeper brought down a Poole player in the area. A linesman was flagging for a previous offside and the penalty decision was revoked and a freekick given to Lymington. On 87 minutes it was Skelton again sending Austin clear of the offside trap. He raced away (nothing wrong with his pace!) and smashed the ball gleefully past the keeper to double Poole's lead and score his 5th cup goal of the season.

As the match entered injury time Poole got a freekick on the edge of the Lymington box and it was no surprise when Skelton stepped up to thump the ball past the wall into the corner of the net to seal the match.
