The top two in the league met at Tatnam as both Poole Town and Bournemouth Poppies took to the field with 100% league records. Extra spice was added to the match with ex Poole players Jason Harvell and Dan Cann appearing for the visitors and Swindon Town boss Danny Wilson in the crowd for another look at Charlie Austin.

New signing from the Bournemouth Youth set up saw Andre Costa start on the right wing with Trefor Smith plying his trade down the left hand side. Carl Preston started on the bench.

A terrific crowd of 486 saw Poole dominate this game from start to finish. Despite Poppie's 100% start in the league they, in truth, did not look like a side who will be challenging in the top four this season. The defence (Harvell apart) did not look convincing and they offered precious little going forwards. Much of this is down to Poole's strength throughout their side which simply did not allow Poppies to get into the game.

The signs were ominous early on as Trefor Smith won the ball and played Cook in down the left. He produced a great cross into the box and Austin headed just over. Austin turned provider on 21 minutes when he flicked on superbly for Cook to race away. As we have seen many times at Poole however Jason Harvell is excellent in one on one situations and he produced a fine save to keep the scores level.

Poole continued to keep the pressure on however and on 31 minutes the breakthrough arrived with a superb goal. Pete Smith played the ball into Austin and then continued his run down the left. Austin played him back in and then accelerated into the box to received the great cross from Smith again, touching the ball past Harvell into the corner.

A bizarre goal followed on 38 minutes when a defender and Austin both went for the same ball on the edge of the box. The defender just got there first and whacked the ball which immediately rebounded off Austin, looped up over a helpless Harvell and dropped in the left hand corner.

Half time: 2-0.

Stu Brown replaced Costa after 57 minutes and shortly after Russell Cook hassled a defender into a mistake before robbing the ball and calmly placing it wide of Harvell into the corner. Points now secure and Preston soon came off the bench to replace Trefor Smith.

On 65 minutes Carl Poore delivered a superb cross into the box and Austin produced a towering header which Harvell had to leap to claw away for a corner. Steve Smith replaced Cook with twenty minutes remaining.

On 82 minutes Dan Cann had the best chance for Poppies when he raced clear only to fumble his shot. Although Jones made the save the ball rebounded to Cann again and with an open goal he blasted high and wide of the bar. Another frustrating day against his former club and his highly vocal comments on his own shot pretty much summed up his and Poppies' overall performance.

Poole added salt to the wounds with two goals in the last six minutes. Poore played the ball into Preston who was unmarked in the box and he took a touch before making it four and a minute later Steve Smith added the fifth and final goal.

The three points saw Poole leapfrog Poppies but a Bemerton win meant that Poole are still second albeit with a game in hand. A tougher test than this is expected at Moneyfields on Saturday.
