Brading Town arrived for this rearranged league fixture looking to end Poole's unbeaten league run and string of thirteen wins in all competitions. Steve Smith started up front with Charlie Austin (back from suspension) while Stuart Brown and Andy Culliford started on the bench alongside loan signing from AFC Bournemouth Carl Preston. There was very little to report about from the entire first half of this game. Brading made it quite clear they had come to defend and this they did in numbers. Their defending was effective too as they looked pretty organised as a unit. Whilst Poole enjoyed the majority of first half possession they were unable to break through a stubborn defence. On 13 minutes Gill made a challenge on the edge of the Brading box and a defender was rushed into a clearance which was sliced straight to Charlie Austin. His first touch was good but the subsequent shot was well wide of the target. It really was the only chance of the half which not surprisingly ended 0-0. Half time: 0-0 Carl Preston and Andy Culliford came on for the start of the second half with Simon Browne and Steve Smith making way. Immediately Poole looked a little more dangerous going forwards and it began to ask some different questions of the Brading defence. On 48 minutes Charlie Austin had a left foot shot fly just over the bar and three minutes later a Dibba header from a corner was superbly saved by the keeper who managed to turn the ball onto the bar before it was cleared away. With Poole pushing forward a little more looking for the breakthrough Brading were still able to venture into the Poole half with the odd counter attack. On 63 minutes the ever reliable Dave Greening found himself in space and he was able to slide the ball past Harvell to give the visitors a shock lead. The lead lasted barely five minutes however as Poole stepped up the pressure and a cross into the box was taken by the keeper but he was proceeded to be bundled over his own line by three of his defenders. Luke Whitley has been credited with the goal however, his fourth of the season. Now level Stuart Brown came on for Hubbard and again the big man caused problems for the opposing defence straight from the off. Carl Preston got more involved as the half progressed and he produced some magic on the left and a superb cross to Brown who volleyed over on 69 minutes. A minute later and after more pressure the ball broke to Austin in the box and he drilled it past the keeper's outstretched right hand. Within another 60 seconds Poole had scored again! A terrific cross from Gill on the right saw Preston nip in front of a defender to thump a header into the net. 1-0 down on 63 minutes but a three goal blast in four minutes saw Poole now two goals ahead. On 72 minutes Gill crossed again and Culliford uncharacteristically headed wide and five minutes later a Taffy Richardson freekick was met by a towering Austin header but again the ball went just wide. Poole were suddenly rampant! The final goal came on 82 minutes - Stu Brown accelerating into the box, drawing the keeper before unselfishly squaring the ball for Austin to side foot home for his 31st of the season. A patient performance as the Dolphins march relentlessly on. |
