Poole Town set up a mouth watering quarter final tie at Cuthbury against Wimborne Town with this comfortable win over Brading from the Island. On a bitterly cold night at Tatnam a strong Town side took to the excellent pitch with the quarter finals firmly in their sights. Ryan Park made his debut in goal and Steve Smith started with Stu Brown on the bench.

This was a game that Poole controlled comfortably from the start and the end result never really looked in doubt. Right from the off Poole created good chances - Steve Smith narrowly missing a Gill cross from the right and Mike Walker heading just wide from an early corner.

On 16 minutes Steve Smith and Bailey-Pearce combined well and the resulting one-two saw Bailey-Pearce unleash a volley which went straight into the keeper's arms. Another Bailey-Pearce shot was parried on 35 minutes and with the keeper stranded a Brading defender did well to get across and just clear the ball from a charging Steve Smith.

On 38 minutes Charlie Austin broke away from the defence and was clean through on goal. A chasing defender could only tug him back just before he got to the area in order to give a freekick rather than a penalty. The referee had no option but to send the player off with a straight red card for being the 'last man'.

Poole took the lead two minutes later. A cross from the right was headed back across the face of the goal by Steve Smith and although Bailey-Pearce failed to get a touch, Charlie Austin was on hand to thump the ball home. Just before half time it looked as though Poole would double their lead. Taffy Richardson provided a superb ball down the right and Kevin Gill fired in a brilliant 20 yard volley which cannoned back off the post.

Half time: 1-0.

Three minutes into the second half and, for me, Brading should have got a penalty. There was hesitation between goalkeeper Park and Lamin Dibba and when a Brading striker nipped in Park threw himself to the ground and clattered the striker. Nothing was given. Things got immediately worse for Brading within sixty seconds. Gill had a shot saved well by the keeper and the ball came back out to Taffy Richardson. His shot struck Steve Smith who turned well and placed the ball in the corner.

Changes followed as Killick made a triple substitution. Leigh Phillips, Stuart Brown and Dave Sturgess replaced Charlie Austin, Taffy Richardson and Steve Smith respectively.

On 75 minutes the Brading keeper did well to turn a Hubbard freekick away after it deflected off the wall and a few minutes later another great Mickey Hubbard freekick beat the keeper but came back off the crossbar and was cleared. Poole were not to be denied their third goal however and in the final minute Leigh Phillips rose to head home a perfect cross - his first goal of the season.
